Several of the key concepts of biopolitics have come under scrutiny since the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. This volume brings into discussion how biopolitics can be conceptualized critically within a milieu of mass healing, such as in India. Contributors to this volume discuss crucial themes like geropolitics and pandemic reflections on the question of old age, borders and logistics in a world emerging from the pandemic, immunization of humans and humanization of immunity, thus defining the Indian contexts of the biopolitical problematic. Extending its analysis into a retrospective vision of thought traditions and socio-political underpinnings that shaped modernity and post-coloniality in India, it also explores the medico-therapeutical discourse embedded in philosophy of medicine and philosophical modernity tracing its interstitial positioning as therapeutic-assemblages in a milieu of mass healing. It examines social movements, anti-caste uprisings, reformers like Ambedkar and Narayana Guru and writers like Foucault and Serres to establish a link between the political and social milieu of the idea of nationhood. Going beyond the legal framework of justice, the essays in the volume reassemble the social from popular perception and the margins, and challenge Rawlsian and Eurocentric paradigms which have dominated discourse on social injustice. The volume also draws on instances of history as well as contemporary issues, as well as locating them in the context of social and post-colonial theory. An intellectually stimulating yet subaltern engagement with the idea of justice, the volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of social theory, law, modern South Asian history and social exclusion and discrimination studies.

This book is about mourning. It is about mourning for a death which has been conceived as a murder but in a distinct fashion as ritualistic, as a sacrifice and as a martyrdom initiating a specific genre of democratic representation marking the birth of the Indian Republic. The person thus mourned was a school teacher and an activist of the Communist Party of India among many other things. He was killed on the first Republic day of India 26th January 1950 in a clash with the police. He had been leading a demonstration called 'Rally for the Rights of the Citizens' pauravakasajaatha purportedly against the highhandedness of the police in the name of maintaining law and order in Nattika Firka in the erstwhile district of Malabar in the presidency of Madras.
